I'm seeking an enthusiastic UC Davis undergraduate or graduate student wanting to gain experience and hone their skills in science communication, particularly using digital media!
Job Title
Student filmmaker/producer of new digital video series for UC Davis’ College of Biological Sciences, “Biological Science for Social Justice.”
Salary
$15/hr for 20 hours/week
Time duration of employment
April 4 - June 14, 2019
Job Description
Biological Science for Social Justice is a new course offered by Dr. Rebecca Calisi Rodríguez, an Assistant Professor in the Department of Neurobiology, Physiology, & Behavior, UC Davis. It will offer a broad survey of the many ways one can use a degree in the biological sciences to better the lives of others and break down barriers that have restricted social mobility. Often, the most visible careers in which one can use scientific training to benefit society are those in the medical and health professions. However, this course will focus on 1) how basic biological research can lead to discoveries and breakthroughs, 2) how these breakthroughs directly or indirectly benefit society and promote social justice, and 3) the scientists who make them – who they are, what motivates them, and their paths to get to where they are today.
Much of the course will support learning via interactive, non-traditional lectures consisting of in-class interviews between Dr. Calisi and guest scientists. The job of the Filmmaker/Producer will be to film these in-class interviews, work with Dr. Calisi and participating guest presenters to collect photo & video B-roll, then cut, edit, and produce one episode per guest presenter to be included in what will become a digital video series under the course’s title.
Responsibilities
Qualifications/Experience (Preferred)
To apply
Please email Dr. Rebecca Calisi at [email protected] by April 1, 2019. Attach or include links to previous work, as well as your resume, CV, and/or you are welcome to simply state your interest and experience.
